How to level Blacksmithing

All tradeskills share one training curve. Each action (a swing, a smelt, a forge, a brew...) adds training points; when the bar reaches the cost of the next skill point, your skill goes up by 1. The cost of the next point at skill s is 1 × (1 + s / 12)^1.7 points, so it is fast early and slower higher up. An action adds 1 + 0.35 × tier points while your skill is inside the recipe's (or node's) optimal range – from its required level up to 20 levels above it. Above that the gain shrinks and reaches zero (“trivial”) 25 levels later: nothing more is learned from that item, and the game tells you to try something harder. Each action also trains a core stat a little (see “Stat training” above). Skills are trained by use and have a soft cap of 250 (like every skill; they can reach 1000).

Smithing basics

• Forge bars into weapons and armour at an anvil. Every base item can be made from every metal: the generated recipe matrix below (base × metal) gives 100 forged items, plus 20 special recipes that add a monster-part effect.
• The item is rolled like a drop of that tier, with a quality (Normal / Magic / Rare / Legendary) that depends on your skill: right at the required level the odds are Normal 93%, Magic 6%, Rare 1%, Legendary 0%; at 50 or more levels above the requirement they reach the normal drop odds, Normal 70%, Magic 22%, Rare 7%, Legendary 1%.
• Uniques and set pieces cannot be forged (set pieces can be made at the anvil from tokens/parts, see the exchange recipes).
• Smithing trains Strength (70%) and Dexterity (30%).

Metals

Metal	Bar	Base skill
Copper	Copper Bar	0
Bronze	Bronze Bar	8
Iron	Iron Bar	20
Steel	Steel Bar	30
Mithril	Mithril Bar	40
Adamantite	Adamantite Bar	50
Diamond	Diamond-Studded Bar	60
Hellstone	Hellstone Bar	75
Frostforged	Frostforged Bar	75
Voidsteel	Voidsteel Bar	90

Bases

Skill needed = metal's base skill + the base's extra.

What trains best at each level

For each skill level: items still inside their full-rate range (highest tier first). Higher tier = more training per action.

The skill curve

Training points needed per skill point, and how many actions that is (at full rate) for items of tier 1, 5 and 9. Tier of crafted items and nodes: see the tables above (iron = tier 3, steel 4, mithril 5 …).
