Eadric the Steward, father of the last king, sits in the heart of the Tomb and keeps the halls as he kept the realm: faithfully, and far too long. It would be a mercy, I think, to relieve him of his post. I put that as gently as the Archive permits.

He is a king still, after his fashion. Kings do not die easily, nor quietly.
On completion
Then the Steward's watch is ended. I shall enter it so in the Rolls: 'Relieved, with honour, YD 412.' Will you put your name to it? No? Then I shall write 'by a traveller'. That is how most of the great entries read.
